Really don't see any problems with updating drivers / downloading security patches when you see a new one.
Just make sure to read what it's about and not click yes-yes-finish! (Also learn-2-roll-back-driver)

Complicating is the true path to simplicity.

You should break it, then fix it.

If something is successful or you are successful you should keep doing things the same way as yes a change could make you even better but there is a risk if you change things up for no reason that it could make you less successful. If you are going to make changes there should be a purpose behind them and they should be well thought out.

or in short If it aint broken dont fix it

I update drivers all the time. There sometimes is a nice performance gain if you install the latest GFXcard and chipset drivers. And if you do it correctly you can go back to your previous driver anyway. So I won't share the opinion about if it isnt broken dont fix it.
